Saturday April 23rd, under a torrential rain, due to the harsh winter suffered in the coast of Esmeraldas province, took place the celebration of Earth Day. School teachers, Promoters of Forest preservation, boys and girls from the schools, fathers and mothers and Vicente Pólit, Director of the Ecuadorian Foundation GAIA-Tierra Viva were part of the celebration.
As part of the program, there was an extensive dissertation by Lcdo. Vicente Pólit, about the significance of GAIA, the Earth, in our life; the ecological, and above all, ethical imperative to acknowledge the rights of the Nature.
The acknowledgement that the Earth is, in is integrity, a living being, an animated super-organism composed by systems in charge to support in harmony the biosphere, which is the sphere of life for countless species, including the human being.
Nature must be also acknowledged as a real being, characterized by being a universal entity of infinite complexity and inter-related in all aspects, firmly structured and organized, essentially dynamic and in constant development.
Once the concept of GAIA as Life is understood, the Human Being must stop looking at here just as a source of exploitable resources for its own benefic and for its despicable squandering, it must abandon that short-sighted and comfortable position and advance towards an understanding of the world where the Nature regains here dignity in from of the Human Being and is venerated by us as our teacher and majority partner, instead of being held as slave and subject of pillage.

Moreover, boys and girls, with their teachers, carried out art works on the walls of Eugenio Espejo School, as a commemoration of Earth Day, giving special graphic relevance to Earth condition of mother and life nurturer.
Then, after midday, it was served a meal, based on cereals and fruits provided by the Earth to feed us and to continue our works, not forgetting to water the Earth with a bit of our fruit juice as a thanksgiving.
The education modules provided by Earth Day Network, were distributed to the principals of all schools in San Francisco area: “The Life Chain”, “What is sustainability?”, “Life without energy”, “Fertilizing in the Classroom”, “We are all responsible” y “Walk for Waste”; so that this material can be taught and circulate as part of the subjects of study in the schools of the region.
This celebration continued with the offering of trees from different varieties, as the beautiful tree of Guayacán and the fine Mahogany among others, that were planted in several locations of the San Francisco: Eugenio Espejo School, public places as San Francisco Graveyard, the surrounding of the Health Center, some streets in San Francisco and areas in Chipa, Caimito, Tóngora, Tongorachí, etc.
The rainy afternoon came to its end, after this simple, modest, but deeply felt celebration to commemorate Earth, our Pacha Mama.
