Impacts of the Eucapacific Company on people and their environment

In Ecuador three models of monoculture tree plantations coexist: the erroneously called "carbon sinks" belonging to the Dutch foundation FACE, the pine tree plantations in Andean communities promoted by organizations linked to the Church and the pulpwood plantation model. In this article we shall concentrate on this latter and more recent model.

Saturday April 23rd, under a torrential rain, due to the harsh winter suffered in the coast of Esmeraldas province, took place the celebration of Earth Day. School teachers, Promoters of Forest preservation, boys and girls from the schools, fathers and mothers and Vicente Pólit, Director of the Ecuadorian Foundation GAIA-Tierra Viva were part of the celebration.

During the 63rd meeting of the UICN Worldwide Nature Union celebrated in Gland from the 14th to 16th of February 2005, 20 new organizations from all over the world became members, among them, the FCSF.

With banners, marimba music and slogans in favor of the mangrove swamp, more than 300 people, representatives of the communities ancestral users of the mangrove swamp ecosystem, were given an appointment yesterday in Quito. They gathered in the courtyards of the National Congress to support and promote the approval of the Mangrove Swamp Ecosystem Conservation Law.

Two types of Australian fleas and two types of Latin American cutter ants have something in common: they like eating pines and eucalyptus. This fact makes them into public enemies, and to be exterminated by the indiscriminate application of toxic products. It does not matter that these toxic substances affect the health of people and the environment—what matters is to protect the forest enterprises from this threat. This is what is currently happening in New Zealand and what has been happening for years in Uruguay, as is detailed in the two articles included in this section.

Water for the year 2000
In order to prevent illnesses linked to poor drinking water, the combined action of two organizations, the Red Cross of Switzerland and the Foundation for the lasting development "Cabo San Francisco," were able to put in place a potable water system in the village.
